Barbara was born in Atlanta on October 5, 1933 to Edward O. Sams and the former Frances Thompson. A lifelong Atlanta resident, she graduated North Fulton High School. Barbara enjoyed a lifelong career at Alston & Bird LLP, where she served as a switchboard operator and receptionist. For 38 years she was “the Voice of Alston & Bird” greeting everyone with her warm, confident, and professional demeanor.
Her loving husband A. Cary Cox preceded Barbara in death. She was devoted to her sons: Scott E. Boylan (Joanne) W. Travis Boylan (Sandra), Alfred C. Cox, Jr. (deceased), John N. Cox, Wm. Reid Cox (Jan), Craig Cox and 12 grandchildren: Drew, Chaz, William, Cole, Zoe, Rose, Charlotte, Alexandria, John, Tommy, Jenny, and Will. Barbara will be missed by her four sisters: LaRue Sellars, Martha Kovitch, Marilyn Alverson, Debra Stegman and two brothers Christopher E. O. Sams and Michael Sams, many nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews.
Barbara was the matriarch and mentor of the family. She was so young at heart her children and grandchildren often sought her advice and life lessons. Her wit and wisdom was served along with the best southern cooking as she graciously entertained her family and friends.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family Saturday, the 14th of November from five until seven o’clock at H. M. Patterson & Son Arlington Chapel. Funeral Service will take place on Sunday, November 15, 2015 at 2:00 pm at H. M. Patterson Arlington Chapel. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park, Sandy Springs, GA.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Barbara’s memory to the American Diabetes Association, or Alzheimer’s Association.
