Bruce Earl Worthington, 56, of Woodstock died Friday, January 24, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Montgomery, Alabama, the middle of three children and only son to parents Billy Earl "B.E." and Virginia Worthington. He moved to Atlanta when he was 8 years old, where he remained for the rest of his life.
Bruce found happiness in many things, but little more than playing golf. He enjoyed it so much that he bought his house in a community where his regular golf course was located, playing frequently on Thursday nights, Saturdays and any other time he could fit in 18 holes. His golf buddies recalled his great annoyance at the ice cream truck speakers that seemed to have a particular knack for sounding a loud tune during his backswing.
Known as "Poppy" to his grandchildren, Bruce was an especially doting grandfather. He found great joy in his grandchildren and would light up at the simple mention of their names.
Since age 18, Bruce has worked for Diamond Roofing Co., a commercial roofing company started by his father in 1971. Upon B.E.'s retirement, Bruce assumed the role of company president, a job in which he took great delight and responsibility. He was especially proud when his son Baxter began working there several years ago marking a third generation with the business.
Survivors include loving wife Phyllis; daughter Lindsay Worthington and grandson Brayden of Dunwoody; son Baxter Worthington of Smynra; parents B.E. and Virginia Worthington of Dunwoody; stepson Chad Butler of Dunwwody; step daughter and son-in-law Ashley and Joe Klima and granddaughter Caroline of Freeport, FL; step daughter Ashley Boles and grandson Jaxson of Birmingham, AL; sister and brother-in-law Sharon and David Mossige of Marietta; sister Lisa Towns of Dunwoody; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family will greet friends on Monday, January 27 from 12:30-2:00 pm with services immediately following at H.M. Patterson & Son Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Road NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to The National Kidney Foundation, Inc., www.kidney.org.
