Carolyn Mann Caswell was born on May 11, 1932, in Birmingham, Alabama, to Clarence Addison Mann and Carolyn Emma Mann. From the very beginning, her life was marked by quiet strength, selfless devotion, and an unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior — the foundation upon which she built her entire life. Carolyn was a woman who put others before herself. Still, she was fiercely independent, and her enduring influence will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Her life was centered on Jesus Christ, and she sought to lead others to the hope He brings.
At the age of five, Carolyn moved with her family to Atlanta, where she attended E. Rivers Elementary School and later graduated from Washington Seminary. She continued her education at Pine Manor College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Carolyn loved art, especially watercolor and acrylic painting, and continued creating beautiful pieces even in her final days, a reflection of the joy and peace it brought her. Her interests in art led her to serve as a docent at the High Museum of Art and at the Tullie Smith House. While Carolyn worked outside the home at times, her highest calling and greatest priority was always her husband and their six children. She poured herself into her family with joy and sacrificial love.
In 1952, Carolyn married the love of her life, Jim Caswell, “her Jimmy.” For 64 years, they shared a devoted marriage rooted in faith, love, and steadfast commitment to one another. Christ was always the center of their home and family life. Together, they were faithful members of the Church of the Apostles in Atlanta. Carolyn and Jim were deeply committed to supporting numerous nonprofit organizations that strengthened their community and state.
Carolyn and Jim shared a love of travel, visiting all seven continents, vacationing in Mexico, and driving across the United States together. Yet her favorite place was the “Watermelon Patch,” the family’s beloved beach house on St. Simons Island, Georgia. There, surrounded by Jim, her children, and later her grandchildren, she experienced her greatest joy. Carolyn will be remembered for her vibrant spirit and her extraordinary ability to make others feel seen, valued, and loved. She was a second mother to many, instinctively understanding people and loving them without judgment.
From the seventh grade, when she was voted “friendliest” and “best disposition,” she embodied warmth and graciousness throughout her 93 years. Finally, Carolyn was a devoted student of the Bible for most of her life and led numerous Bible studies over the years. She lived her faith fully, and almost until her final days, she continued to lead and attend Bible studies, sharing her love and wisdom with all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Emily; her brothers, Addison and Alden; her beloved husband, Jim Jr.; and her son, Jim III. She is survived by her children: Robbie Caswell; Charlie and Betsy Caswell; Tommy and Suzanne Caswell; Lee and Nancy Caswell; Lynda and Keith Guthrie; and Holly and David King. Her pride and joy were her sixteen grandchildren: Jim Caswell IV (Laura Leigh), Eleanor Simonsen (Eric), Tyler Caswell (Maggie), Charlie Caswell, Jr (Kaitlyn), Britt Caswell (Betsy), Alden Caswell (Katy), Tommy Caswell, Jr (Mary Margaret), Lee Caswell, Jr (Marianna), Grace Marchesini (Jack), Sarah Canale (Philip), Reese Guthrie, Patrick Guthrie, Cary Guthrie, Eliza Guthrie, Caswell King, and CJ King. Carolyn also leaves fifteen great-grandchildren. Additionally, she is survived by her sister-in-law, Anne Caswell, and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will be held at The Church of the Apostles, 3585 Northside Parkway, NW, Atlanta, Georgia, in the sanctuary at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 6, 2026. A reception will immediately follow the service.
The family is deeply grateful to the caregivers who provided compassionate and devoted care during the final season of her life.
