

Carter Braxton Pope, 92, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2026. Braxton was born in 1933 in Atlanta to Mark Cooper Pope, Jr. and Nancy Braxton Pope. He attended North Fulton High School and Vanderbilt University, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Braxton served in the United States Navy, primarily as a Gunnery Officer on the USS Saratoga. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he attended Emory University School of Law and received a J.D. degree.
Braxton worked for many years at Citizens & Southern National Bank and Decatur Federal Savings and Loan, as well as in commercial real estate. He was a lifelong member of the Cathedral of St. Philip. He had an avid interest in his family history and genealogy and was a member of the National Society of Washington Family Descendants.
He most enjoyed spending time with his family and close friends, traveling, watching football, fishing, and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. Braxton loved celebrating special occasions, and friends and family always looked forward to his homemade eggnog at Christmas, a beloved family tradition. He was known for his friendly and outgoing personality and had a gift for remembering names and making others feel welcome.
Braxton is survived by his wife of 46 years, Donna Hodges Pope, two daughters, Rebecca P. Coppedge (John) and Nancy P. Glass (Mike), five grandchildren, Evie, Eleanor, Frances, Braxton, and Cooper, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Mark C. Pope III, and his sister, Jaquelin Pope Adams.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 15 at 2PM in Kellett Chapel at Peachtree Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Atlanta Community Food Bank.
