

Charles Wesley Thompson Sr., D.D.S., 89, of Atlanta, died Saturday, March 14, 2015. Born in Bladenboro, NC, on Dec. 21, 1925, he was one of seven children of Frederick Weaver Thompson and Cecile LeQueux Thompson. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific and was honorably discharged in 1946. Following his discharge, he attended Emory University and then Emory University School of Dentistry where he earned his D.D.S. degree in 1952. He completed his oral surgery specialization at University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Medicine in 1954 and residency training at Atlanta Veterans Hospital and Grady Memorial Hospital. He married Virginia Vogt Thompson of Lake Wales, Florida, on Jun. 12, 1954. They lived in Atlanta where he was in private practice for 39 years. Dr. Thompson also taught part-time at Emory University School of Dentistry for 25 years, published several articles, was one of the founders of West Paces Ferry Hospital and was a member of many professional organizations. He was a life-long member of Mount Paran Church of God where he was an elder emeritus. He and his wife enjoyed traveling to many destinations around the world. Dr. Thompson combined his love of travel and mission work by taking two three-week trips to remote areas of South Africa to provide medical and dental care to the poor. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Virginia; three children, Charles Wesley Thompson, Jr. and his wife Lisa Mortensen Thompson of Alpharetta, Paula Thompson Collins and her husband Michael Lee Collins of Atlanta, and William Frederick Thompson and his wife Cynthia Peret Thompson of Gig Harbor, WA; five grandchildren, Suzanne Leigh Thompson of Alpharetta, Haley Suzanne Collins and William Lee Collins of Atlanta, Corey Vogt Thompson of Santa Clara, CA and Reid Peret Thompson of Gig Harbor, WA; a brother, Robert LeGrande Thompson and his wife Dee Conard Thompson of Atlanta, as well as many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 21, 2015, from 2-5 p.m. at H.M. Patterson & Son-Arlington Chapel in Sandy Springs. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, 2015, at Mount Paran Church of God with Dr. David C. Cooper officiating. Burial will follow at Arlington Memorial Park.
