Frances’ early childhood was spent happily in Newington, Georgia. She graduated from Savannah High School and attended the University of Georgia.
She met Captain George Altman at Hunter Army Airfield in the early 1940’s while she was serving as a volunteer nurse. Frances and George were devoted to each other throughout their 69-year marriage.
Her creativity and entrepreneurship were legendary, as was her love for her family. She published a book of her (mostly) humorous poetry and authored hundreds of essays on life and characters that were both real and imagined.
Frances also enjoyed writing country songs, one of which was recorded. For many years she operated “Frances Altman Antiques” on Peachtree Road with the support of Andrea, her granddaughter, Bonnie, her daughter, and Judy, her daughter-in-law.
Frances was preceded in death by her husband, George Gustave Altman. She is survived by her daughter, Bonnie, her sons, Craig, and Gary, her daughter-in-law, Judy, as well as grandchildren Andrea, Allison, Erin & Mason, Jonathan, and David & Leigh and 11 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 11 AM on Monday, November 15 at Arlington Memorial Park, Atlanta.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Frances' memory to the Beth Jacob Synagogue, the William Breman Jewish Home, or to a charity of your choice.
