

George W. Black, Jr., 69, of Sandy Springs, passed away January 18, 2015. He is survived by his wife Caryl, daughter Karen Hibbets and husband Rick, grandchildren, Gwen and Charlie. He is also survived by three stepdaughters: Katie Burlage Lenz and husband Frank, Serena Manning and husband Jiles, and Shana Sumner; and four step-grandchildren; Brandon Burlage, Sumner and Lainey Manning and Israel Garcia. He will also be missed by his three beloved terriers Julie, Monty and Carrie. George was born in Atlanta and was a graduate of Avondale High School. He attended Georgia Tech and earned a degree in Civil Engineering in 1969. He served in the Air Force as a pilot and aircraft maintenance officer for B-52’s. He served as Director of Transportation for Gwinnett County for more than 10 years and retired from the county after 22 years of service. While at Gwinnett County, he taught at the Police Academy and provided his expertise in training many police officers in traffic accident reconstruction. Upon his retirement from Gwinnett County, he received a Presidential appointment and served as a Board Member of the National Transportation Safety Board for two terms of office. Upon the completion of his terms of office he continued to work for the National Transportation Safety Board as a Research Specialist. The family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s Association in lieu of flowers. A memorial service will be Monday, January 26, 2015 at 2 o’clock with the family receiving friends beginning at one at H.M. Patterson and Son, Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Rd., NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328.
