Gilbert John Kloster, MD, of Sandy Springs, died November 2, 2018. Dr. Kloster was born on December 1, 1933 in Plymouth County, Iowa and was the son of the late Nis Nielson Kloster and Emma Joanne Kloster.
Dr. Kloster served in the United States Air Force as a Tech Sargent. Following his military service he went on to complete his BA in History, Pre-Medical education, and Residency at the University of Nebraska. Dr. Kloster completed his Residency in Plastic Surgery at the University of Michigan. Honorary Societies include Alpha Omega, Honorary Medical Society and Phi Alpha Theta, Honorary History Society.
Dr. Kloster began his career in 1970 in Boulder, CO. He moved to Atlanta, GA in 1978 and was affiliated with numerous hospitals serving the Atlanta community. He served as the President of the Sandy Springs Chamber of Commerce from 1990 to 1991. Dr. Kloster retired from his Plastic Surgery Practice in 2006. He continued his care of patients working as an ER and Urgent Care Centers physician and Medical Director of Hospice.
Dr. Kloster and his wife, Jayne, were members of Peachtree Presbyterian Church where they developed close friendships of 38 years. He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren who knew him as Doc Poppie. Dr. Kloster's hobbies included reading, landscape design, gardening, travel and golf.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Jayne Marie Kloster; children, Peter Kloster (Allison), Corbett Kloster (Katherine), Kimberly Van Antwerp (Greg), Michelle Shifrin (Kevin), Kayla Ledyard (Jamie), JonVieve Hill (Charley), Allie Garofalo, (Jason), Christiana Tarpley (Josh); 21 grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and siblings, Judy Brunn, Marilynn Bayles (Dick), Roger Kloster (Cheryl), Sharon Sumners, Twylla Miller (Tom). In addition to his parents, Dr. Kloster was preceded in death by his previous wife, Phyllis Kloster; son, Michael Kloster; granddaughter, Kaitlyn Kloster and brother-in-law Alvin Brunn. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Peachtree Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends Thursday, November 8, 2018 from 6 to 8 o'clock pm at H.M. Patterson and Son, Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Rd., NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. Funeral services will be Friday at 1 o'clock pm at Peachtree Presbyterian Church, 3434 Roswell Rd., NW, Atlanta, GA 30305. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park.
