Harriet Fortgang, of Tucker, Georgia, died peacefully, of complications from a massive stroke suffered more than a year ago. She was predeceased by her parents, Lou and Gert, and her brother, Bill. Harriet Berkowitz was born on March 20, 1943 to Louis and Gertrude Berkowitz in the Bronx, New York. She grew up in the Bronx, attending the High School of Performing Arts, then graduating from James Monroe High School. After attending the University of Tampa, she enrolled at the Eastern Medical College, where she earned her certification as a licensed x-ray technician, and then worked in that capacity for a radiologist. Although they had known each other for several years, she began dating Steve Fortgang after his enlistment in the Airforce. Two years later, they married. After the birth of two sons, a career opportunity spurred the young family to move to the Atlanta area, settling in suburban Tucker. Harriet, a natural athlete, competed in handball, racquetball, tennis and adult soccer. The family enjoyed boating, tent camping, and water skiing at Lake Lanier. She also assisted Steve coaching several youth baseball teams. Along with her love of athletics, she had a particular fondness of animals. She would often be found at the parks with her beloved dogs. In 1993, Harriet was diagnosed with lung cancer. She underwent multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, but it was her fighting spirit and determination that carried her through incredible odds. Harriet worked in the finance group at Consolidated Freightways (which evolved through Mercedes Benz Credit Corp to Chrysler Credit Corp) and retired when the position was transferred to Dallas, Texas. Harriet’s central focus was on closeness to her family, friends, and co-workers. She was loyal, generous, and supportive, with an infectious good humor. Those who’ve known her recognized that she was one of a kind and that she always put others ahead of herself without asking for anything in return. A loving, caring wife and mother, she took particular pride in her sons, daughters-in-law and her grandchildren. She is survived by husband Steve, sons Greg (Melisa) and Wayne (Jean), granddaughter Haley, grandsons Brandon, Ryan, and Ethan, and several cousins. In lieu of flowers, please make a generous donation to your favorite charity. Graveside services will be Friday, June 3, 2016 2 o’clock at Arlington Memorial Park.
