Hiram Farrell “Griff” Griffies, of Atlanta passed away peacefully with his family by his side on November 18, 2025, at the age of 93. Griff was born in Flint, Michigan on October 28, 1932, to Hiram and Ruth Griffies. He was a graduate of Brown High School in Atlanta, president of his class and voted best all-around senior boy. He earned his B.A. from GMI (Kettering University) as a co-op student with General Motors and his MBA from the University of Detroit.
After serving 3 years in the Naval Reserve, Griff started his business career with General Motors, where he met his beloved wife, Barbara. As he said with no regrets, he would have had that night school law degree if he hadn’t fallen in love. Those cold winter evenings with Barb were far more interesting than reading for a tort class. After a few harsh Michigan winters, he was ready to return to Atlanta where he had consulting opportunities at Georgia Tech and Fry Consultants. He served as president of Munford, Inc., group vice president of National Service Industries, Inc. and as president of World Bazar. The final stage in his career included being a coach and mentor to presidents and CEOs with Vistage International and as a commercial arbitrator with American Arbitration Association. Despite a demanding work schedule, he never missed a game, match or performance of Todd or Trayce’s while always encouraging them to maintain a positive mental attitude, or PMA as he often exclaimed. His positive outlook was the cornerstone of his success.
In all of his endeavors, Griff never took himself too seriously, was a true southern gentleman, a good listener, and a servant to the community. He was a Big Brother, served as Director of Junior Achievement, was a member of Leadership Atlanta, Atlanta Crime Commission, Kiwanis and the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church and the Cherokee Town and Country Club. His favorite moments with Barb were spent dancing, searching for that perfect piece of art while traveling, and watching countless Braves games and old movies together. He enjoyed fiction writing, golf, reading, attending endless Falcons games, and a good martini, but most of all enjoyed spending time with his loving family on Saint Simons Island where his ashes will be taken.
He is survived by Barbara Lucile Griffies, his beloved wife, companion and best friend of 66 years, his wonderful son, Todd Edwards Griffies (Jeannie), his dear daughter, Trayce Drake Griffies, his cherished grandson, Trent Evann Griffies, his devoted sister, Martha Klinger and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hiram and Ruth Griffies.
Memorial contributions can be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research or to The Children’s Village at Christian City, Inc. in Union City, Georgia.
The Family would like to thank his wonderful caregivers from Live Oak Caregivers in Atlanta. A visitation will be held at H.M. Patterson and Son- Arlington Chapel in Sandy Springs on Saturday, December 13th, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
