James Raymond Jones, 86 of Atlanta, died March 28, 2015. Mr. Jones was born in Columbus, GA and was the son of the late Lester and Kathleen (Catchings) Jones. Raymond attended Georgia Southwestern College in Americus and the University of Georgia. His career in the LP-Gas industry began in 1952 with the Automatic Gas Co. in Columbus, Ga. and ended after his retirement at age 75, having owned A Better Gas Company in Commerce, Ga. since 1981. Always a staunch supporter of the LP-Gas industry, Raymond served as Vice President of the National Tank Fabricators Association; Vice President of the Southeastern Area Young Gassers Association; three times GALPGA Supplier Director; Chairman of the association’s Convention Committee and Membership Committee; and, served on the NLPGA Education Committee. He was elected President of the Georgia LP-Gas Association and served in that role from 1982 until 1985 where he initiated many new programs and was a regular contributor to the Georgia Propane Gas Marketer, an industry publication. In addition to his parents, Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his son, James Raymond Jones, Jr. and is survived by his wife of 34 years, Bernice C. Jones; children, James David Jones (Dana), Olga Harris, Lisa Batris (Steve Summers), Fred Batris; grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Jones, William David Jones, Zachary Nathaniel Harris (Anca Briznan), Ian Matthew Harris, Sarah Marquelle Harris, Adrianne Ring (Zachary), Andres Batris; 4 great grandchildren; and honorary children Debbie Banks and Steve Marks. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The American Heart Association. The family will receive friends Saturday, April 4, 2015 beginning at 2 o’clock with a funeral service at 3 o’clock at the chapel of Northside Drive Baptist Church with Dr. James Lamkin and Dr. Michael Gregg officiating. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park.
