Born on March 2, 1939, in Cleveland, Ohio, Jerry’s formative years taught him to be equal parts resourceful and resilient. He worked a multitude of jobs, put himself through college, and upon receiving a B.A. from Western Reserve University, became the first member of his family to obtain a college degree. He landed a position at Chesebrough-Ponds soon after graduating and quickly transferred to the Atlanta area.
Jerry rapidly rose through the ranks to become Regional Vice President of Sales. A savvy businessman with an entrepreneurial spirit, Jerry declined advancement to the national level and instead chose to co-found Newburger-Andes & Company, a real estate investment firm, in the mid-seventies. His nearly fifty years of hard work and dedication proved invaluable to this company’s enduring success.
Jerry loved nothing more than spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren, all his pride and joy. A member of Cullasaja Club, fishing from his dock in Highlands was a favorite pastime. When not overseeing a home-improvement project, he could be found on a golf course, in the company of his two dogs, or tending to his koi pond, preferably with a good cigar.
Philanthropic endeavors included an endowment for a Yates College Scholarship through the GSGA Foundation. In the 90’s, Jerry served on the board for the Foundation for Medically Fragile Children. Having developed a love of theater, Jerry became a founding member and committed benefactor of City Springs Theatre Company. He regularly donated to organizations that help wounded vets secure housing and his deep affection for animals is evidenced by the numerous charities he enthusiastically supported for decades.
Jerry will be remembered as a kind man, selfless father, and devoted husband whose sole desire was to make people smile, laugh, and feel comfortable, supported, and seen. He strived toward excellence and inspired those around him to do so as well. After all, “it’s easy to be ordinary!”
Preceded in death by his mother, Ethel “Dolly” Andes, his father, Mike Andes, and his brother, Bill Andes; Jerry is survived and will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, London Levi Andes, his children, David Michael Andes (Dragana), Laura Elizabeth Andes, Alexandra Andes Sessa (William), and 4 cherished grandchildren.
A longtime member of Atlanta Country Club, a celebration of his life will be held there in the coming weeks.
The Andes family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Trauma and ICU staff of Wellstar Kennestone Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Angels Among Us Pet Rescue (P.O. Box 821, Alpharetta, GA 30009) or GSGA Foundation in honor of the Jerry & London Andes Endowment (2205 Northside Drive NW, Suite 200, Atlanta, GA 30305).
