Miss Jimmie Grace Phillips died peacefully on September 3, 2020. She was born in Redan, Georgia, on March 1, 1926. In 1931, she moved to Kissimmee, Florida to live with her Aunt Ellen and Uncle Grady Babb. Jimmie attended Osceola County schools and graduated from Osceola High School in 1944. She moved to Atlanta after high school and worked for Standard Oil Company. She enrolled in Georgia Tech night school to study draftsmanship. Upon completion of her studies, Jimmie was hired by the Transportation Department of the state of Georgia in 1952 as a cartographer, from which she retired in 1985. She enjoyed her job of mapmaking immensely.
Jimmie was an avid golfer and Ben Hogan fan and had two hole-in-ones. She was member of Business Girls League and was the last surviving member. She was an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church and served as a long-time member of Morningside Presbyterian before joining Trinity Presbyterian Church in 1999. She walked in every Atlanta Hunger Walk since its inception, raising over $100,000 for that cause. Her other favorite charity was Habitat for Humanity, and she helped build homes with them from 1990 through 2019. Jimmie was a cat lover and also rescued many cats.
Jimmie is survived by her favorite cousins Charlene Murray of Davie, Florida, and Jeannette Calderon of Opelika, Alabama, best friends Pat Decker, Lisa Webster, Michael Gazdick, Veronica Ridenhour, Pam Yawn, members of the Street family whom she adopted as her own including Margaret, Janet, and Carolyn Thigpen, cousins Raymond Babb, Nancy Atkinson, Linda Babb, Phillip Branson, her church family, and residents of Arborgate.
Jimmie was preceded in death by her father in 1931 and her mother, Mary Jo Hames, in 1952.
Funeral service will be held at H.M. Patterson and Son, Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Rd., NE, Sandy Springs, Monday, September 14, 2020, at 2:00 PM. Visitation will be at the funeral home prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 PM.
