John was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on October 11, 1963 to Dolores Jean Garrity (Dee) of Plymouth, Minnesota and Ronald Raymond Notermann, who preceded his son in death. In addition to his immediate family, John is survived by his three siblings: Charles (Chuck) David Notermann (spouse Stefani Braun) of Waconia, Minnesota, Anne Elizabeth Ducharme (spouse Douglas) of Plymouth, Minnesota, and Mark Ronald Notermann (spouse Jurina) of Seattle, Washington. John is also survived by his parents-in-law, William Douglas and Mary Elizabeth Wingate, of Albany, Georgia, and his brother-in-law, Richard Allen Wingate (spouse Tammy) of Atlanta. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Francis and Catherine Notermann and Leslie and Dolores Tester, all from the Minnesota area.
John graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1985 with a B.S. degree in Accounting. He moved to Atlanta in 1986 to marry his southern sweetheart, Brenda Wingate Notermann. In Atlanta, he worked for the public accounting firm of Ernst & Young and became a tax partner with the firm in 1996 when he moved to the Nashville, Tennessee office. John and his family returned to Atlanta late in 1998 as he worked as Senior Vice President of Development for Mariner Healthcare. In 2003, John founded Southern HealthCare Management where he served as CEO. The company operates 38 skilled nursing facilities with 4,500 beds in Florida, North Carolina and Georgia. Southern HealthCare Management provides a full array of rehabilitative and ancillary services and has been consistently profitable from its inception. Through John’s leadership, Southern HealthCare Management developed into an industry leading company focused on providing high quality care to patients residing in its facilities. His leadership, intelligence and keen wit were an inspiration to all who worked with him and to all of his friends who spent time with him. Everyone recognizes that John was truly one of a kind in a great way.
John married Brenda Wingate Notermann, originally from Albany, Georgia, on August 15, 1987. They have three sons: Grey, 23, who graduated from the University of Georgia, completed his graduate studies at Texas Christian University (TCU) and is beginning his career at Deloitte in September; Cole, 21, who is attending TCU and Win, 18, who will be attending University of Texas in August. Although John assembled and maintained a thriving career of his own, nothing was more special to him than his three boys and their success. He spent his lifetime providing opportunities and experiences that would shape them and provide them with a strong foundation for their futures. John was also very interested in the lives and successes of his four nephews, Danny and Michael Ducharme and Robert and Zach Wingate, and three nieces Mika Notermann, Brianne Wingate Cunnion and Ellee Wingate.
John’s hobbies included extensive travel, golf, bird hunting, saltwater fishing and twentieth century military history. John, Brenda and their family have visited six different continents including wonderful trips to Hong Kong, Spain, Paris, Sydney and a South African safari. He also enjoyed cheering for his sons as they participated in their many sporting activities, especially as they progressed through the Northside Youth Organization (NYO) where he met so many special friends. Three Atlanta organizations were dear to him: The Westminster Schools, Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School and NYO. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you may consider a gift in his name to NYO at 20 W. Wieuca Road, Atlanta, Georgia 30342.
A memorial service for John will be held at two o’clock in the afternoon on Tuesday, the 25th of July at the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. Following the service, the family will welcome friends for a reception at Cherokee Town and Country Club at 155 West Paces Ferry Road at 3:30 pm. Proper attire is required for the reception.
