Margaret M. Mc Whirter

Margaret McGinn McWhirter passed away peacefully on May 3, 2013. Born in 1920 in Charlotte, NC, she was the second of four children of Samuel Baxter and Jessie Evans McGinn. Margaret’s mother died unexpectedly in 1934, and later Margaret was blessed to have Gertrude Cole McGinn as her stepmother. Margaret graduated from Charlotte Central High School and attended Queens College where she was a member of Phi Mu sorority. In 1942 Margaret married Thomas F. McWhirter of Charlotte. Together they shared more than 71 wonderful years of marriage while living in Charlotte; Birmingham and Montgomery, AL; Jackson, MS; Atlanta, GA and Bronxville, NY. Margaret was a dedicated wife and mother who lived her life exhibiting the qualities of “the wife of noble character” described in Proverbs 31. She enjoyed needlepoint, ceramics, golf, volunteering at Lawrence Hospital, and was an active member of The Dutch Reformed Church in Bronxville. After Tom’s retirement and return to Atlanta, they joined Peachtree Presbyterian Church where, for over 18 years, Margaret was a faithful volunteer receptionist. Margaret is survived by her husband, Tom and two sons: Thomas F. McWhirter, Jr. (Rae) and Barry Evans McWhirter (Daphne) of Atlanta and six grandchildren: Peyton McWhirter (Kyle), Greer Hughes (David), Gray McWhirter (Sydney), John McWhirter and Ali McWhirter, all of Atlanta, Matt McWhirter (Jessica) of Athens, GA, seven great-grand children, a brother-in law, a niece and seven nephews. The family is grateful for the loving care and support given to Margaret by her devoted caregivers: Peter Muchina, Esther, Faith, Jackie and Penny. A private family graveside service will be conducted at Arlington Memorial Park. A memorial service for family and friends of Margaret and Tom will be held at 2 o’clock Tuesday, May 7 at St. George Village in Roswell, GA.
