Richard Mason “Rick” Whitney, 75, of Atlanta passed away on Sunday, December 14, 2025 after a brief illness. Rick was born in Charleston, SC to the late Mason and Helen (Roberts) Whitney. He was a lifelong resident of Atlanta and proud Georgian. He went to R.L. Hope Elementary and graduated from W.F. Dykes High School in 1968. He attended the University of Georgia, Andrew College, and graduated from Valdosta State University. Growing up, Rick was an Eagle Scout with Troop 59 and served as an acolyte at the Cathedral of St. Philip.
Rick adored his two younger sisters who survive him, Robin (Steve) Williams of Lake Burton, formerly of Royston, and Clare (Jonathan) Kent of Lookout Mountain and Lake Burton. He is also survived by his Williams nephews and niece, to whom he was very close: Drew (Kelli), Clark (Maria) and Whitney; and by the Kent children: William (Ashley), Mary Clare (Seth), Alex (Catherine) and Abbie (Mills); 5 grand-nephews and 4 grand-nieces, several cousins and their families, and his beloved cat, Bubba. His nephew, Craig Williams, predeceased him.
Rick was a grateful, compassionate, and devoted 36-year friend of Bill W. He was a gifted storyteller and incredible writer who loved sharing memories of simpler times growing up in Atlanta in the 1950’s and 60’s, when Atlanta still felt like a small town. Rick treasured the family home on Lake Burton and the many friends and memories formed there. He was an avid reader.
Rick had a dear circle of friends with whom he spent many happy hours visiting, watching football, and enjoying meals together. He was known for his sharp wit and generous spirit. He loved Georgia football and let you know it. He was cherished by a lifetime of friends and will be greatly missed.
As Rick had planned, his body was cremated. Services may be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please connect with an old friend and catch up over lunch or coffee in Rick’s memory.
