To Sally, Bobby, and David:
I recall the first time I met your father. It was Christmas Eve, 1958. Bill was dating my cousin, Nancy Patillo, and the two of them were the main players in a prank my father, Gene Winn, was playing on a lifelong buddy, Smiley Cornett. Seems Smiley formed a crush on my 3rd grade teacher, Miss Cagle. She was an attractive blond young woman, and often brought up in Saturday night conversations over a glass of bourbon. The details of the prank convinced Nancy to impersonate my teacher and show up at my house at my father's annual Christmas Eve party. Nancy was a great actress. She and Bill were not married yet, but Bill drove Nancy to the party and waited in his car while Nancy entered our home and party. Nancy wore a sash around her as one would see on a beauty queen. She entered and was introduced to Smiley as his Christmas present from Santa. Nancy insisted that she was sent by Santa and cuddled up next to Smiley. The poor man was so flustered that he was lost for words and attempted to deflect Nancy's persistent attention. Smiley's wife sat mortified on his other arm. His wife, Mary, was not in on the prank and became agitated by the scene. This went on for sometime before Bill, who was now standing outside looking at the party, was invited in and both Bill and Nancy were introduced to the panicking Smiley Cornett. Bill and Nancy (aka. Miss Cagle) said their farewell and went on their Christmas date. Smiley never recovered from the shock and embarrassment; however, after time, it became one of our favorite family stories thanks to Bill for his willingness to share Nancy for the evening. Fortunately, Bill married Nancy and became a wonderful part of the extended family. Always present and delightful at the large family gatherings. I will miss you, but you will always be in my thoughts.
