Amma Pearl Boone was born April 16, 1925, not in a town or city, but a community on a mountain known as “Big Ridge” in Alleghany County, Virginia. Her early education was in a one-room schoolhouse on the mountain. As a young adult she moved to Clifton Forge, Virginia where she lived with an aunt and worked as a waitress. She met Sam Boone when he came home from World War II and they were married March 3, 1945.
The couple later moved to Portsmouth, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Lanham, Maryland. Amma was a homemaker and also worked part time at the Hecht Company in Maryland. Upon retirement in 1978 Sam and Amma moved to DeBary, Florida. Amma was a devout Christian and loved her church and church family. She worked faithfully as a deaconess and made many visits to nursing facilities. She will be remembered by her friends as a dedicated Rook player!
Sam and Amma had two children, Barbara McGinn and Sam Boone, Jr.; four grandchildren, James Patrick McGinn, Jr., Jessica Londono, Octavio Londono, and Natalie Smith; and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, siblings, and son-in-law, James Patrick McGinn, Sr. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be missed by both her family and many, many friends.
