

Dorothy Warriner Smith-Fox was known by many as Great grandma, Grandma, Aunt, or Mom but everyone called her Dot. She passed away September 21, 2015 in Altamonte Springs, FL. She spent her life caring for everyone in her family and for her friends. She loved all of the family dogs and they all felt her love and would spend hours sitting with her. She was always the life of the party and never met a stranger. She instilled her sense of character and dignity in her daughters and her extended family. She filled the lives of her nieces and nephews while extending herself as their surrogate mother. The great grandchildren would play for hours as she sat with them and enjoyed their sounds and excitement and she looked forward with great anticipation to spending time with the newest crop. Greatly loved by her grandchildren and they learned many of life’s lessons from Grandma Dot and will miss her greatly. Dorothy was born in Norfolk, VA on March 28, 1923, and at a relatively early age took care of her mother and three sisters after her dad passed. She was a competitive bowler of duck pins and ten pin league, President of the Retired Officers’ Wives Club, President of the Ladies 9 Hole Golf and Queen of the Red Hatters in Land Harbor, NC. She was a giver of time and talents to Hospice, Grandfather Home for Children and volunteered at the Cannon Memorial Hospital in Newland, NC. Dorothy was also a member of the Newland United Methodist Church Newland, NC. She spent most summers in the mountains of North Carolina in Avery County playing golf, volunteering, and retirement. Dorothy was a great mother to two daughters Stephanie S. Turner and Claudia S. Davis. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, Marie and Ormond Warriner, her three sisters, Marie Bates, Patricia Tullius, Inez Bennett, a grandson, Bryan Chad Barks, and husband Lt. Col (Ret) Harry Wayne Smith, and second husband, Lt Com. (Ret) Frederick Fox. Dorothy is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Stephanie S. and Robert Turner; Claudia S. and Joseph Davis; 3 grandchildren and their spouses, Andrew and April Turner, Amanda and Gordon Stasak, and Wayne and Caitlin Davis; 3 great-grandchildren Bryan and Keller Davis; Blakely Stasak. The family will receive friends Friday, September 25, 2015 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Baldwin-Fairchild Oaklawn Chapel, 5000 County Road 46A, Sanford, FL. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA at a later date.
