Mr. Langs, as he was known professionally, practiced criminal defense for more than 24 years. Born and raised in Detroit, Mr. Langs attended the University of Michigan (where he pledged Beta Theta Pi) and worked for the Detroit Red Wings before going to law school in Massachusetts. He was the Note Editor and staff member on the Law Review and graduated cum laude. In 1998, Mr. Langs began his career in indigent defense as an Assistant State Public Defender in Seminole County when he moved to Florida. He was with the Federal Defender's Office, MDFL, for more than 20 years, pursuing trial, appellate, habeas, and post-conviction matters. Mr. Langs worked in the Appellate Division and welcomed any opportunity to discuss and explore how to better improve our ideas and systems of criminal justice and defense.
Steve, as he was known to family and friends, married the love of his life, Heather Langs, on March 27, 1993. Their three children Alexis (Lexi) Langs, Chase Langs, and Adam Langs live in Brooklyn, Orlando, and Ann Arbor, respectively. As the family grew through marriage, Steve proudly proclaimed that he indeed had five children: Lexi is married to Ian Aric, and Chase will be marrying his fiancé Kayla Algeo next year.
Steve is predeceased by his father, Richard John Langs; his mother, Beverly Ellen Langs; and his sister, Cil Langs.
Steve was an avid reader (as evidenced by the Stephen King novels lining the walls of his office) and a passionate U of M fan (Go Blue!), but he found the greatest joy in spending time with his family. They would often gather at the beach, where he was happiest.
Strolling along the shoreline with Heather’s hand in his, his eyes would sparkle as he told his children that from the moment he first locked eyes with her, he knew they would build a beautiful life together.
His children have always stood in awe of their parents’ marriage: Their love, their resilience, their strength. It is important to Lexi, Chase, Adam, Ian, and Kayla that they share their Dad’s own words regarding his wife of nearly 30 years. Nothing exemplifies his love for her more.
“Of Heather’s many virtues, she has the greatest capacity for Faith. Her faith in God, her faith in this life, and for reasons I still can’t fathom, her faith in me.
No matter how many mistakes I make, and no matter how many times I fall, she is always, always right there to lift me up. And for that, Heather, I will always love you. Always.”
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Grosse-Pointe Woods-Shores Little League. Some of Steve’s happiest childhood memories involve his time on those baseball fields…and he’d never miss watching the Little League World Series on TV each year.
