Tom spent over 35 years of his life instructing Martial Arts with a focus on American Kenpo Karate and later MMA. He was a mentor for thousands of youth as they learned to master self defense. He owned and operated many successful Karate Schools and Gyms in the central Florida area. He also had 2 international tournaments: Gator Nationals and Kratos World Karate Championships. However, this is not what Mr. Sommerville was most proud of..
If asked, he was most proud of being a father figure to countless youth who came to him for help and wisdom. Coaching them on what it means to have self discipline, respect, and always becoming better.
Over the years he developed numerous close friends and had an impact on so many people inside and outside the karate world. His family will remember him as a man who could fix anything, grill a mean chicken breast or steak, kill any spider or snake around the house or yard.
He loved football and could be found cheering on the Pittsburg Steelers or Georgia Bulldogs. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his family outdoors by the pool and pump iron in the gym. He was also artistically inclined and had a knack for painting beautiful wall murals, about martial arts of course.
Left to cherish his memory are his children; Alexis, Ciara, and Anthony; his fiancé Deanna; siblings, Alberta, Billy, Jack, Dora, Katie, Barbara and Walter; as well as numerous other extended family members and friends.
A Celebration of Thomas’ Life will be held on Sunday, June 28, 2020 at Baldwin Fairchild Oaklawn Chapel at 1:00 P.M. with a gathering and reception to immediately follow.
In lieu of flowers, please contact or mail contribution to Ms. Alberta Santora (443-527-7276) C/O Alexis Sommerville College Fund; 8204 Northview Road; Baltimore, MD 21222.
