A room lights up when Carolyn enters. She is Cheerful, beautiful and full of love. Carolyn is predisposed to be a happy person. She wakes up happy. Our home reflects her. All windows, sliding glass doors open to the garden and flowers. This is Carolyn, very open and cheerful no secrets. Nothing to hide. What you see is what you get.
Look around our home and you see her artistry and creativity. It is a happy home. Full of possibilities. Puppy dogs, kitty cats and as 4H leader, baby chicks, lambs and goats? Yes, all kinds of critters have been in our home.
I remember coming home from work to a house full of kids. My question was “how many are staying?”
There is a lot of love in our home! Where do you think Judy and Jenny came from?
Working in outside sales calling on business during the day. Got GIA certified and sold diamonds at night. She said. “Great fun, have you ever seen an unhappy person buying diamonds?” She could work circles around everybody. Teacher, Writer, lecturer, as an entrepreneur Created Cute Things Unlimited and Family Caravans. She was the youngest female wagon master in the USA. A women alone with 4 young children leading a caravan of trailers and RV’s thru Canada’s North West. Calgary, Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise. Vancouver
Horse shoe and cow chip throwing events. Gopher hole decorating contest. I would fly up, do a little fishing with the happy campers and drive them home.
We sponsored little girls with World Vision and Plan International. What were they doing with our contribution? With visas and medical shots we packed up by lingual material, candy, balloons and off to Columbia. The State Department did not tell us that Monteria was in a red zone (shooting war) . It was like the old west, men with side arms and women spontin beautiful holstered machetes. Tamaco on the river Mira was amazon jungle where Carolyn had to crawl up a slippery mud banks to get to the school.
Did I mention that Carolyn is also an athletic and a good golfer? We played in Australia, New Zealand, Wales Portugal Spain and Scotland’s San Andrews. How many women you know who during a golf tournament got a hole in one. Look at her trophy in the pool room. Alaska was one of her goals and we sailed there several times. Speaking of sailing. Surviving her cancer operation, we sailed in a 3 mast motor cruiser from Lisbon around the Iberian Peninsula to Barcelona. Stopping every day to play golf. Our most interesting sailing adventure was my 75th birthday present cruising from Tahiti on the Paul Gauguin to the Marquesas Islands.
Her last cruise was her favorite. Taking grandsons, Matt and Nickolas to Holland, Denmark, Germany Finland and St Petersburg. (She loved Russia)
Married 08/06/1957
Spring 1956 I rang the front door bell of the USC tri delta house. I had a date with Nancy Porter that night but a dream in a long evening dress opened the door it was Carolyn. WOW. I got turned down 3 times before we had our first coffee date. That fall I gave her my ATO fraternity pin. My whole house and I sang under her window. “My little tri delta won’t you come out tonight and sing by the light of the moon.” Corny but magical.
Summer 1956 from Venice Italy, I proposed to her over the phone in Laguna Beach.
In many ways our whole life has been magical. It helps when you marry a witch. Oh yes! Carolyn was a Welch Witch. (The good kind). A wizardry force of nature, that make things happen.
Carolyn wondered why I didn’t run. Early in our relationship, one night in a swimming pool, she looked up at me and said “We will get married and have 4 children 2 boys and 2 girls.” Glad I didn’t run.
Every day with Carolyn was like that box of cholates, never knew what adventure would be next.
I take comfort in knowing that she will always be with me, just in a different way.
