Doris "Cookie" June (Berry) Kuhn, age 90, of Huntington Beach, California passed away at St. Joseph's Hospital on Monday, November 6, 2023. Doris was born in Chester, Illinois on June 14,1933 to Angus and Florence Berry (Rebbe).
Cookie, as her father fondly nick-named her after the song, "Lookie, Lookie, Lookie here comes Cookie," was raised in Chester, Illinois. After High School, she attended Missouri Baptist Nursing College, becoming a Registered Nurse in 1954. She met Ernest Kuhn "Ernie" while he was a patient at the hospital. They were married August 1954 and made their home and family in St. Louis, Missouri. The family moved to California in 1963. She was widowed by March of 1964 as Ernest had succumbed to cancer.
She went back to college when her children were young and earned a B.A. in mathematics after which she returned to her nursing career. Doris excelled as an Operating Room Nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital in Orange, CA for over 35 years, in charge of the YAG laser. She trained and was an inspirational mentor to many nurses and staff that benefited from her guidance and expertise.
After retiring from St. Joseph's she became reacquanted with former friend and colleague, Patrick Humphreys, M.D., with whom she had worked with in the OR. They fell in love and married December 30, 2005. They spent seven fun-filled years of family gatherings and travelling until Patrick passed away in October 2012.
Doris had a welcoming smile for everyone she met and a lively sense of humor. She made many life-long friends at St. Joseph's Hospital and later enjoyed puzzles and playing RummiKub with her friends in her retirement home.
She is survived by her loving children, Michael E. Kuhn and Mirela (Sioux City, IA), Nancie M. Crosby and Don (Herndon, VA) and John E. Kuhn and Sandra (Huntington Beach, CA). Grandma Cookie adored her grandchildren, Samuel, Jacob and Elisha Kuhn, Thompson and Eric Crosby, and Laura and Jonathan Kuhn. She is also survived by her older sister, Norma Gunn (Sioux City, IA). She was preceded by loving son Brian E. Kuhn.
A memorial will be held at Fairhaven Memorial Park and Mortuary on Saturday, January 20, 2023 at 10:00 am. Immediately following, Doris will be interred next to Ernest W. Kuhn at Good Shepherd Cemetery in Huntington Beach.
