

Dr. George Heneghan passed away on January 4, 2017 in Newport Beach, California, ten days short of his 86th birthday. He is predeceased by Margreta Heneghan, his loving wife of 60+ years. George is survived by his daughters, Michelle (Tom) Thomas and Maura (Lucien) Rouse, as well as grandchildren, Martin (Jamie and her daughter, Leah) and Shaun Thomas, Shannon, Lucien and Colleen Rouse. Born in Brooklyn, New York, George graduated from St. Michael’s Diocesan High School in Brooklyn. He earned his Bachelors and Masters at Columbia University and then served in the United States Air Force, stationed in Waco Texas, where he met and married Margreta. Together they moved around the country, before settling in California where he earned his PhD in Political Science from Stanford University. Buying their first and only home in Orange, California, George was a professor and chairman of the Political Science Department at California State University at Dominguez Hills for over 35 years, as well as an educator for extension courses at UC Los Angeles, UC Riverside, Rio Hondo College, and Long Beach City College. George and Margreta taught and traveled for many years aboard Chapman College’s World Campus Afloat and Stanford University’s Alumni Association ship. George is remembered by family and friends for his incredible love of learning, his interest and curiosity about people’s lives and his wonderful zany sense of humor. A memorial will be held at Fairhaven Memorial Cemetery on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at 12:30pm in the Memorial Chapel.
