Grace Yoko Osumi was a loving, kind, sweet, and strong person. She was born on February 5, 1942, in Los Angeles, California to Shigenobu and Yuriko Miyabe. She had three siblings: Shig, Mary and Henry, and she was the second oldest of the four children.
In 1942 after Grace was born, she and her family were forced to leave their home in Los Angeles, California and were relocated to the Japanese Heart Mountain Relocation Camp in Wyoming, where they resided for three years before leaving in 1945. After moving back to Los Angeles, Grace graduated from Belmont High School and later worked as a hairdresser with her sister at Geisha Girls Salon in Van Nuys.
Grace met Jerry Osumi, the love of her life, and the two of them were married on February 27, 1966. They were married for 59 years and were blessed with two children, Deana and Daren. The family found their forever home in Fullerton, California in 1973.
Grace enjoyed gardening, going to Las Vegas, and yearly house boating trips, but the most important thing to her was her family. She loved the role as wife, mother, and grandmother to Dylan and Reina, as well as spending time with family at holiday gatherings and on vacations.
Grace worked as a secretary for the City of Fullerton and the Fullerton Police Department. Unfortunately, she was forced to retire in her early fifties due to a stroke leaving her with no feeling on her left side of her body. With strength and determination, she didn’t let her disability get in her way. Later in life she was faced again with another setback being diagnosed with breast cancer. Once again, she showed strength, determination, and positivity and again came out a survivor.
Grace was truly an amazing woman. Her perseverance and positive outlook were a source of inspiration. No matter what challenges were thrown her way, she always kept a smile on her face and kept pushing forward. Grace will be missed dearly and will be remembered for her loving, kind spirit and the warrior that she was.
She is survived by her husband Jerry, daughter Deana (Matt), her son Daren, her grandchildren: Dylan and Reina; her brother Shig, sister Mary, and brother Henry.
