Neal spent his early years in Detroit near grandparents and cousins. In 1960 his family relocated to Southern California —a move that would shape the course of his life. He graduated from Valley High School in Santa Ana and went on to pursue higher education with dedication and purpose. Neal earned a Master's Degree from Humboldt State University, a testament to his commitment to learning and personal growth.
Neal found his professional calling as a middle school counselor at DeAnza Middle School in Ventura, California. In this role, he touched the lives of countless students with his guidance and support. His work reflected a deep care for young people and a belief in their potential.
Outside of his career, Neal embraced life with curiosity and enthusiasm. He had a deep appreciation for a wide variety of music and found joy in the rhythms and melodies that accompanied him through life. The beach was one of his favorite places—offering peace and reflection —and he also enjoyed backpacking, exploring nature with a sense of adventure.
Neal is lovingly remembered by his sister Suzanne Weir and her husband Michael Weir; as well as by his nephews Nicholas Weir, Jeffrey Weir, and Christopher Weir. He was preceded in death by his mother Hazel Etter and father Edward Frank Etter.
May Neal Edward Etter's memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire those whose lives he touched. A Graveside Service will be held on June 28, 2025, from 02:00 PM to 03:00 PM at Fairhaven Memorial Park & Mortuary 1702 Fairhaven Avenue, Santa Ana, CA 92705.
