He was born in Toledo, Ohio, the oldest of 5 kids. At 17, he joined the Navy and eventually went to USC on an NROTC scholarship. It was here that he met his beloved Nora. Together, they forged a beautiful life that included 5 children, 10 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren (with more on the way), and a warm, loving home.
Their love story bloomed for 47 years till she was sadly taken from us in 2003.
In the Navy, he served in Asia, and Washington, and taught electrical engineering at the Naval Academy in Annapolis., . When he transitioned into the Naval Reserves he joined Hughes Aircraft Company. His 34 years here brought many adventures. He moved, with our mom and his young family to England where he helped shepherd us through many European adventures. After moving back to the US in 1973 he took on projects in Saudi Arabia and Iran, and even worked on Nasa and FAA projects.
He lived a long and amazing life, full of world travel (54 countries), charity (Soy and Global Volunteers), family, friends, adventure, and a tight relationship with God.
He faced his pancreatic cancer diagnosis with courage, optimism and determination. With the good Lord's help, his original life expectancy of three months turned into almost 3 years! Up till a month ago he was still hiking 1-4 miles/daily and continued to volunteer at SOY, a charity my mom started in 1993!
The morning before he died, in typical Don Maher fashion, when asked if he wanted anything, he got a twinkle in his eye and said, "You know, I'd really like a drink." Out came the Bourbon Cask Scotch with ONE ice cube and SCHWEPPES club soda.
Here's one for the road Dad! You will be missed.
He is survived by his brother Dan Maher, daughter Kalia Codde, sons, Don, Ed, Karl and Richard, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
