February 16, 1924 – January 13, 2021
Former Resident of San Jose
Born in Milpitas, Andrew was the son of Manuel Vargas Henriques of Faial, Azores and Anna Rose of Mission San Jose. His family farmed along the East San José foothills on the upper end of Sierra Road. The family farm produced peas, barley, and corn. He entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and attained the rank of Sergeant in the Hospital Train Service Command Unit based out of the Presidio in San Francisco. Andrew was in charge of a 32-bed rail car and for three years traveled throughout the U.S. delivering wounded soldiers from both the Pacific and European theaters. Following the end of the war, Andrew married Bernice Furtado of Campbell and soon joined his father as an apricot rancher. He retired from farming in 1966 and began working for the Milpitas School District in facilities maintenance and landscaping. Andrew was well-liked by principals, teachers, and co-workers. He was known for his engaging personality, positive outlook, and ability to fix anything. In later years he enjoyed playing golf and traveling with friends. Andrew was a founding member of the Milpitas Veterans Club and an active member of both St. Victor’s and St. Francis de Assisi parishes.
Andrew shared 73 wonderful years with his wife, Bernice and was the father of Marianne (deceased) and Donald. He was father-in-law to Ana Micotti Henriques and loving grandfather to Gabriela and Antonio Henriques. Andrew was preceded in death by brothers Alfred, Lawrence, and William and leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at https://www.stjude.org/.
