Antonio Scarcella was born on November 25, 1931, in Spezzano Piccolo, Italy. He left his country and family in 1951 to board a ship to America in search of the promise of a better life. He returned in 1959 to marry his childhood sweetheart, Maria.
Antonio and Maria settled in Niagara Falls, NY, to be near his mother and brother’s family, who had also left Italy and settled in Toronto, Canada. Maria and Antonio had one son, Giampiero (John), and later moved to Santa Clara, CA, where they settled in 1971.
Antonio had many passions and excelled at them all. He was a master gardener and took great pride in his vegetables and fruit trees, especially his prized tomatoes and fig trees. He loved sharing his bountiful harvest with friends and neighbors alike. He was an avid sports fan, particularly Torino FC and the Buffalo Bills. He was an award-winning Aviculturist raising blue ribbon canaries and cockateels in his hand-built backyard aviary. He excelled at carpentry, tile and brick work, and carried on his family tradition of tailoring, a skill he shared with his beloved Maria. He enjoyed wine making and made it an annual family event with his son and grandchildren.
Antonio was proud of his Italian heritage but just as proud of his service in the United States Army, where he first felt like he truly belonged in his adopted country.
Antonio is survived by his son John, his four wonderful grandchildren, Christian, his wife Paula, Cameron, Vincenzo, and Kaarina and his two great-grandchildren, Luca and Lorenzo, his niece Gina, nephews Sergio and Antonio, and their families, many friends, including his best friend of close to 90 years, Frank Vigna, with whom he spoke almost daily.
