December 12, 1931 to August 7, 2013
Resident of Santa Clara
John was called home by God on Wednesday. He was born in Hilo, Hawaii. At an early age, his family moved to Oahu where he lived until 1969. He married the love of his life, Marilyn Medeiros, in 1954. He served eight years in the Navy from 1951-1959 and was based at Pearl Harbor and San Diego. After leaving the Navy, he worked as an accountant at Pearl Harbor for a few years and then joined the U.S. Postal Service. He was a very hard working and loving father and worked multiple jobs while raising three children so they could attend a Catholic school in Kailua, Hi. He moved his family to Santa Clara, CA in 1969 and continued working with the U.S. Postal Service until retiring in 1986. In 2002, he lost his beloved Marilyn. He loved God with all his heart, mind, and soul and volunteered to sing at St. Justin Church for several years. A few years ago, he took his final vows and became a member of the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites. Most recently, he was a parishioner at Our Mother of Perpetual Help. John is survived by his three children and their spouses, Walt (Carol), Karen (John), Mike (Cathy); nine grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Kristen, Carley, John, Nicole, Thomas, Christopher, and Mary; four great grandchildren, Iris, Marilyn, Greyson, and Harper. He was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn; parents John and Olivia; sisters, Betty and Sister John Olivia; and brothers, Richard and Teddy. A special thank you goes out to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Kaiser; his Carmelite, St. Justin, and Our Mother of Perpetual Help friends; and especially Doris and Michael Atkinson. A Rosary service will be held Tues., Aug. 13 at 7pm at Lima Family Santa Clara Mortuary, 466 Winchester Blvd. A funeral Mass will be held Wed., Aug. 14 at 11am at Our Mother of Perpetual Help, 1298 Homestead Rd., Santa Clara. Because John Carvalho was born and raised in Hawaii, Hawaiian attire is appropriate. Interment will follow in Santa Clara Mission Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions to the following organizations would be appreciated: Arthritis Foundation, PO Box 96280, Washington, DC 20077, Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, 386 Park Ave South, 17th Floor , NY, NY 10016
