Winnie Hook, passed peacefully on June 11, 2013, with family at her side in her home in Santa Clara, CA at 107 years young. A Celebration Mass will be held on Saturday, July 6th 10:00 am at the Carmelite Monastery in Santa Clara. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Carmelite Monastery, Loaves and Fishes or Martha's Kitchen. In accordance with her wishes, there was a private family burial at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery. Winnie was born Noreen Fern Bastian on February 14, 1906, in San Jose, CA to Louis and Fern Vicy Bastian. In 1923, she met and married Wilbur J. Hook, her husband of 60 years, who preceded her in death in 1983. They had two daughters Esther (Rick) Rechenmacher and Sharon (Bill) Gissler. She was the loving grandmother of 15 (Heidi [Ananda], Laura, Sandi, Joseph, Nancy, Clare, Hans, Toby, Ted, Merry, Vonna, Cynthia, Mark, Stephen, Andrew), great grandmother to 38, and great-great grandmother to 21. She was a loving aunt to the McTighe and Anderson families and was preceded in death by her three younger brothers Aaron, Lawrence and Everett. Winnie attended weekly mass at the Carmelite Monastery and was an active member in Santa Clara University's Catala Club since 1937. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and made a special effort to always remember them on their birthdays; she sewed or knitted much of the clothing worn by her family throughout her lifetime; had a magnificent garden and grew many of her own vegetables and fruits; she collected dolls and made detailed clothing for them; she loved to travel and see new places and was a large supporter of local charities and helping others. Special thanks and acknowledgment to her granddaughters Ananda and Nancy and Mrs. Lydia Porwol who have provided Winnie with daily care since 2011.
