

Alfred George Mitchell Arlington Heights, IL/Sarasota, FL, passed away in his sleep Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at 8:32 AM at his youngest son James Mitchell’s home in Palatine, Illinois. He was under hospice care and his sons, James and Douglas Mitchell were at his side when he passed. Alfred had a very strong faith in Jesus Christ and as a Christian is at peace in heaven with his wife Esther. Alfred was born in Alexandria, Egypt on January 8, 1925. He served in the Egyptian Army and worked for the British Army in Egypt. He immigrated to Chicago in 1948 where he served in the US Army and became a very proud citizen of the USA. He met his wife Esther (Patson) at the Aragon ballroom in Chicago during the summer of 1951 and asked her to marry him halfway through the first dance. How they loved to dance. They married December 22, 1951. During his entire life Alfred was a jeweler, first in Egypt and then in the US working for Simon Brothers, CD Peacock, and Sears Roebuck. Alfred and Esther founder Mitchell’s Jewelers in 1969, working with their sons Douglas, James and brother Fred. The store had great success and continued to expand. He had the vision to see what the future held for downtown Arlington Heights and was the first major rehabilitator of a historic building, which is the beautiful location where Mitchell’s Jewelers now resides. Alfred lived in Arlington Heights, retired to Sarasota Florida, and then moved in with his youngest son, after the passing of his wife Esther. He spent the last two years of his life in the loving care of his son James and granddaughters, Michelle and Victoria. He is preceded in death by his loving wife and partner of over 63 years Esther, two older brothers Fred Mitchell, Edward Mitchell, and two older sisters Mary Takla and Yvonne Habib. He is survived by two sons Douglas Mitchell (wife Deni) of Saint David, AZ, granddaughters Jessica Mitchell of Austin, TX, Julie Greksa, (husband Aaron Greksa and great granddaughter Annabel) of Phoenix, AZ, step grandson Jason Lake of Glenview, IL, step granddaughter Tifanie Lake of Tucson, AZ, son James Mitchell (Colleen Murphy) of Arlington Heights, IL, granddaughters Victoria and Michelle Mitchell of Palatine, IL, brother-in-law Nazir Habib of Barrington, IL, sister-in- law Josephine Mitchell of Indian Shores, FL, brother-in- law Elmer Patson of Anchorage, AK, and many beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Visitation will be Monday, August 7, 2017 at 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at Wiegand Brothers Funeral Home, Sarasota. Graveside service will follow at Sarasota National Cemetery at 1:30 PM.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gulf Gate Church, 6501 S. Lockwood Ridge Rd., Sarasota, FL 34231.
