Emma Volk Sloper, a longtime Sarasota resident, passed away on November 19, 2016, at the age of 93. Emmy, as she was affectionately known, was born on October 30, 1923, in Allendorf, Germany, the youngest of the three children of Phillip Volk and Elisabeth Rees Volk. She worked at the university in Giessen, Germany, where she was recognized by many for her great work ethic. Emmy came to the United States in 1953 aboard the SS Queen Elizabeth, with her husband, Master Sargeant Homer H. Sloper. The family resided in the Washington D.C. area for many years, where she worked in the banking industry, managed a bakery, and was a devoted wife and mother. She was also a member of the local Eastern Star. Emmy retired to Homestead, FL, to be close to her family, and lived there for many years. She was a devout Christian, and sang beautifully for many decades in her church choir. Her many other interests included mentoring other German emigrants, nature and gardening, animals, reading and cooking, and she was often complimented on her fashion sense. Emmy was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her two daughters, Edith V. Mehiel of Sarasota, FL and Block Island, RI, and Barbara Franklin, of Homestead, FL, as well as six grandchildren (Kelly, Dennis, Michael, Erika, Edith, and Sean), and five great grandchildren (Zachary, James, Olivia, Katheryne and Kameryne). The Family will hold a small private service at the Wiegand Funeral Home. "...and in your dying shall your Spirit and your Virtue still shine like an evening afterglow around the Earth..."
