Howard Ernst Gollnick

Howard Ernst Gollnick 93, died Easter Sunday April 16 in Hospice care. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin July 17, 1923 and grew up in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. In 1943 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and graduated as a B-17 pilot from Maxwell Field Air Force Base and sent to England where he flew 35 missions over Europe.He met the love of his life, Lore while stationed in Cleveland and they spent 70 wonderful years together. In 1961 they moved to Sarasota from Shaker Heights Ohio when they purchased The Green Thumb Florist shop. He joined The Chorus of the Keys, Barbershop Harmony and was a 55 year member. He had a beautiful Bass voice and was in several quartets. When Sarasota had its King Neptune Frolics festival he was King Neptune 1972-73. In 1976 he and Lore moved to Vail, Colorado where he was in charge of Landscaping for 10 years. In 1986 they returned to Florida. Howard had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. He was a member of St. Armands Key Lutheran Church and a faithful Choir member there. He had been a member of the Sarasota and Vail Rotary clubs, Lakewood Ranch Elks Lodge, volunteer with PALS of Sarasota at Gulf Gate Elementary School and The Military Officers Associations of Sarasota. Howard was preceded in death by a sister Eileen Dow, a brother Robert Gollnick, grandsons Erik Gollnick and Jose Santos. Surviving are his wife Lore, sisters Barbara Henkel and Carol Noble, sons Mark (Joy) Gollnick, William (Marisol) Gollnick and Theodore Gollnick, grandchildren Heather Crawford, Emily Slabaugh, Robert Michael Gollnick, Alison Gollnick, Kendal Gollnick, Leah Wood and 6 great grandsons.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 A.M. Friday, May 19th at Wiegand Brothers Funeral Home, 7454 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL followed by a short military service at 1:30 at the Sarasota National Cemetery.
