Olga Peters was born on August 25, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois to Ralph Dimmit Winstead and Zena Einbinder Winstead. She spent her childhood in the Washington, D.C. area, and often vacationed at Herald Harbor, Maryland. Olga briefly attended the University of Chicago in 1941-42, while living at Hull House, the pioneering settlement house founded by Jane Addams. Wanting to contribute to the war effort, she worked as a dispatcher for the National Maritime Union in San Pedro, California. Following this, she moved to New York City in 1945, and took a position as a copy editor for the Polish Free Press. In 1946, Olga began working as an editorial assistant at The New Yorker magazine, while Harold Ross, the founder of the magazine, was still the editor-in-chief. In 1950, Olga met and married Edwin W. Peters in New York City. In 1951, they moved to Denver, Colorado, where their two children, Marilyn and Ralph, were born. They returned to New York in 1959, and raised their two children in Baldwin, a suburb of New York City. In 1977, they moved into New York city, living in the Greenwich Village area. Olga retired from the New Yorker Magazine in 1987. Olga traveled extensively with her husband Edwin and with friends, visiting China and most of the capitals of Europe. Upon her husband’s retirement, they moved to Pelican Cove, Sarasota, in 1989, where they participated in many of the Pelican Cove activities.
Olga lived a long and full life, and was known throughout the Pelican cove community as a kind, generous, and gracious person. She is survived by her two children, Marilyn Peters of Arlington, VA., and Ralph Peters of San Diego, CA , grandchildren, Laura, Claire, Brendan, Cole, and Evan, and her great grandchilden, Tyler and Jack. Donations in her memory may be made to Planned Parenthood or Emily’s List. A family memorial for Olga and Edwin will be held at a later date in the Washington D.C. area.
