Dad was born south of Esk, SK on May 15, 1921 and passed peacefully the morning of Sunday, February 2, 2020 at RUH. Albert took his schooling at Deer Plain, Bieberdorf & Haliburton in the Esk/Jansen district & quit school at age 14 to help out at home. He worked during haying & harvest to earn money and in winter trapped weasels, rabbits, beavers and even skunks!! The fur wasn’t worth much but it was income. Dad was called to serve his country in 1942, enlisting with the Regina Rifle Regiment. Training took him to Sarcee Camp Calgary, Wainwright, AB and many points in BC. He served in England, Belgium, Holland & Germany and joined the Army of Occupation when the war ended. He returned home to Jansen in January 1947. In March 1947 Dad bought what would become the “home place”, 6 ½ miles south of Jansen, and began a mixed farming operation. He married Evelyn Schinkel on April 18, 1949 and together they worked to eke out a living despite the hardships and uncertainty of farming-always living within their means. They retired to Saskatoon in 1985. My dad was known to be an “exact” man, meticulous and orderly, he wasn’t one to cut corners. Everything he did was above & beyond what was called for. He enjoyed old country & gospel music, nature & wildlife, peace & quiet and taking walks and country drives, especially to the farm. He was a voracious reader and kept up with current events & politics. He was kind and humble with a quiet, gentle spirit who found great joy in helping and giving to others. We will long remember his wry wit and wonderful sense of humour! Above all he valued his independence and guarded it fiercely until a fall from a ladder at 89 necessitated a move to an assisted living facility. In April 2019 he relocated to our home until a fall hospitalized him on January 27. He passed away at the age of 98 years, 8 ½ months. Albert is survived and will be immeasurably missed by his daughter Marilyn (Garry) Ryan; step grandchildren David Ryan, Tanis (Dave) Shanks and Sean Ryan; step great grandchildren James Ryan and Channing, Tristan & Ainsleigh Shanks; brothers-in-law Ernest (Eileen) Schinkel, George Schinkel and Bruno (Paulette) Schinkel as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Karl (1947) and Amalia née Meyer (1941) Schondelmeier; wife Evelyn née Schinkel (1998); sisters Olga Draht, Adelma Klebaum & Erna Kihn; brother Henry Schondelmeier; sisters-in-law Margaret Arnst, Esther Koschinsky and Verna Schinkel. His hard working hands are finally at rest and he has the peace he so desperately longed for as the ravages of old age took their toll. I’ll miss you more than words can say. Schlaf wohl Dad.
