Anne Cholod passed away at the age of 87 with love and support from her family.
Anne was born May 18, 1930 in the Drobot district of Buchanan. She was the 9th of 13 children born to Prokop and Annie (nee Bilyk) Zaharia.
Mom’s biography provided her family with a rich description of her early life giving us a strong understanding of her values and purpose. Here are excerpts from her writing:
“On a warm, sunny Sunday mother gave birth to a small baby girl. It wasn’t a fancy or sterile birthing room, a floor upstairs of a log house that the family call lovingly, ‘Our Elevator’”.
“My mother was quiet and hard working, she loved all her children, trying to bring out the best in all of them. Her attitude to prayer had the greatest influence on me.”
“Work on this mixed farm was never done. There were many mouths to feed. I was a curious child asking mother many questions. I was Mother’s Go-For girl. If she had a task big or little, she would say, Pobeeje Hania!, (Run Anne!).”
From the farm, Anne moved to Saskatoon to attend Nutana Collegiate and then Teacher’s College. Anne taught in many small towns in Saskatchewan before attending the U of S college of nursing.
Anne was in a nursing program at the Royal University Hospital, when her future husband, Andrew Cholod moved to teach in Perdue in order to be close to her. On August 11, 1957, they married and settled in Saskatoon where they began raising their family.
While Anne raised her family she continued to teach school and nurse in Saskatoon hospitals. Her friends, classmates and former students have always been important to her. She worked hard to maintain relationships throughout her life.
Education was important to Anne, and throughout her life she earned degrees in Education, Nursing and Theology. This value was understood by her children and grandchildren who have all, to date, pursued post-secondary education.
Following retirement from her career as an educator, Anne had the opportunity to pursue Northern Nursing. A time in her life that challenged and broadened her passion to serve those who were isolated and underserved.
Anne was involved in numerous activities and passions. Her love, friendship and influence was always valued. Anne was an active advocate for numerous people and organizations. With her strong Christian values she would help people in need. All of her families were important to her--relatives, spiritual, artistic, athletic, nursing, teaching and those in communities near and far.
Mom remained active until three months before her death. She loved biking, golf, tennis, track and field and participating in Saskatchewan Senior Fitness. She valued an active life in Arizona and enjoyed walking the beach in Maui. She even parasailed at the young age of 80! Anne’s interests and activities were shared with her children and grandchildren. Family time was often spent on court, a course a beach, or at a card table—these were times full of love and laughter.
Anne is survived by daughters Andrianne (Dan) Antymniuk, Alisa (Reg) Leidl and son Andrew (Tammy) Cholod and grandchildren Brett (Maria), Joel (Laura), Mark (Amber), Eric (Nichole) Derek, Katelyn(Sean), Joshua, Anna, Drew; great grandchildren Arthur, Archie and Adelyn; sister Iris Kalinowski (Mike) and Marlene Zaharia; sister in law Margaret (Elmer) Kinaschuk; brother in law Ted (Kathy) Cholod; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends in Canada, USA and the Ukraine.
