Azoria Wilkes (nee Toffan) passed away on August 26, 2020, at age 92. She was born August 12, 1928, a twin to Alvina, on the farm at Hyas, Saskatchewan. Though she moved as a young woman to the big city of Regina to work, she loved the farm throughout her life. She was predeceased by her husband George, daughter Karen, grandson Patrick, parents Stefan and Lillie, and siblings George, Alvina, John, and Katie. She is survived by daughter Gail (Wayne) Shandro and children Alexandra and Christopher; daughter Jan (John Suchorab); and son Michael and children Francesca and Julianna.
Mom and Dad met in Regina on a blind date and enjoyed trips to Regina Beach for fish and chips at the Blue Bird Cafe on Dad’s Indian motorcycle. They were married in 1948. Mom worked at the Parliament Buildings for a short time, but became a full-time mom and homemaker in 1950, when Karen was born. Gail joined the family in 1954, Jan in 1961, and Michael in 1963. The family moved to Tisdale in 1955. They treasured lazy summers at their Kipabiskau cabin, Anglican church services on Sundays, trips to the library where Mom shared her love of reading, barbeques, gardening, and Mom’s fantastic family meals in the big green house. We all looked forward to her scrumptious homemade lasagna, burgers and buns, pies, cinnamon buns, cakes and cookies. Mom bowled at the Tisdale Lanes for over 50 years and made many lifelong friends. She also joined the ACW, the Eastern Star, and canvassed door to door for various charities for years. Later, Mom and Dad built their retirement home at Greenwater and loved their new lake life and friends. They also enjoyed travelling to Hawaii, Arizona, and to the Maritimes. After Dad died in 1995, Mom moved into Maple Ridge Condos in Tisdale. She loved her community, enjoying a coffee out with friends or a visit in the store while shopping.
A private family graveside service was held September 3, 2020, officiated by Father Gethin Edward.
Our mom was the best - she loved unconditionally and always wanted the best for others. She was steadfast in her convictions and her dedication to family and friends. Her smile and sense of humour was always there, even at the end. She taught us to always be thankful, respect others, and find a peaceful compromise. Most of all, she inspired us to be independent and strong - thanks, Mom. We love you.
