Anita was born and raised in Saskatoon prior to her brief stay at the Wheatland Lodge nursing home.
Mom will be lovingly remembered for her caring and giving heart. She was always willing to help anyone who asked her. She would always find a way to assist. She was generous way beyond her means.
Mom loved to surround herself with family and friends. She loved to tell stories about memorable times and events that were important to her. She always had a good sense of humour and liked to make people laugh, especially if she saw that they were sad or troubled about something. She never wanted to see anyone remain that way. Mom loved going for lunches with family and friends. We often visited Miramar in Market Mall back in the day. Then we would be off to Winners, Value Village or some other thrift store or antique venue.
Mom loved her home and cherished filling it with antiques and sought out treasures she loved to hunt for. She loved collecting and displaying beautiful things with a true decorator’s eye. She had a talent for feathering her nest in an artistic curated manner. She created an environment for her enjoyment and pleasure as well as others who were invited to her home. This was her passion; to surround herself with what she considered beautiful.
Mom also loved to play the piano. Though she never had a lesson, she learned to play by ear as a child. If she knew the song that was requested, she could play it like she owned it. Whenever there was a family gathering and there was a piano available, we would always encourage her to play for us. We would love to hear her play and watch her expressions while she played. Most enjoyable.
Mom treasured the times she could hang out with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She always had a special treat or gift to give them, younger ones, as well as the older ones. They always enjoyed her company and built many memories.
Mom was always the go-to girl for any costumes you might need for any occasion. She even had a tickle trunk full of stuff for costuming and theatrical supplies. Whether it was Halloween, New Years, Masquerade Balls, or Murder Mystery parties mom could get it done. She would get an idea and put together costumes usually with things from thrift stores, antique clothing or whatever stuff she had on hand. And this usually included the make-up and bling. There were always many compliments on those creations of hers. She had such fun doing that kind of stuff.
Mom loved to entertain and had many family dinners and social events where she would bring out the fancy goods and table scape with the best of them. It helped that she could really put on a spread. When she cooked, she cooked well and nobody ever left hungry. And everyone would be in their best duds too. Fancy hair dos, makeup, and all the latest fashion trends. This was back in the day when almost everyone smoked and nobody worried about double dipping or spiking the punch. Jokes abounded and there might even have been a roust-about or two from the rebel rousers or those who were too near the beer bar. Hey you know who you are. Oh, and God help you if you broke anything…..Mother would flip her switch! She would lose her humanity! “1 - 2 Your momma’s comin’ for you”.
Mom really loved watching the old classic movies and would make a game of remembering the actors’ names and what other movies they were in. She loved the music, dancing, styles of the time, and of course the furnishings of the sets, costumes, and hair dos. She was also very fashionable herself. As a young woman she matched everything she wore with the jewelry that she chose. It was said she always dressed to the “nines”. And she wore her hair in a beehive with curls and ringlets. Everyone thought she looked like Elizabeth Taylor and yup, she did!
Everything she did, she did with style. She was such a classy lady. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her or spent any time with her. She was very much a social butterfly. There seemed to always be someone at her door. Put the coffee on…..We love you mom. Bye for now.
There will not be a funeral. A Private Internment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers in Anita’s honour, a donation may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
