It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our mom, Doreen Schmidt (nee Born). Mom passed away peacefully at St. Paul’s Hospital on the morning of Thursday January 16, 2020.
Doreen was born in Saskatoon in 1941, and was raised in Hague, SK where she attended school and met one of her lifelong friends, Norma Pangracs (Ben). She moved to Saskatoon as a young woman, meeting her future husband Alan on a blind date, experiencing true farm life in advance by being picked up for the date in the family grain truck! Romance and grain dust were in the air... they married in 1962 and went on to take over the Schmidt family farm in the early 1970’s, working it until retirement in 2000.
Mom loved gardening, flowers, and especially dogs, and always had a piece of food ready for any pooch that wandered nearby. Mom never met a dog she couldn’t spoil. She had boundless energy and was always there for her family, be it a hug whenever it was needed, an absolutely spotless house, or fresh baking every day. Her buns are legendary. Just ask Norma.
Mom wore a number of hats in her work life... bank teller, fresh cream and egg-magnate, bus driver, and member of the local SaskTel team, but she was always ‘mom’ first, putting family ahead of all others. Whether when working or in retirement, her favourite time of the day was ‘coffee time’, and was not governed by any clock... anytime was coffee time, but there had to be cookies involved of course.
Mom spent her last three years in the Warm n’ Cozy care home where she was welcomed as one of the family. Words cannot express our profound thanks to all those who were part of her life there. We’d also like to convey our deep gratitude to the wonderful team at St. Paul’s Hospital who took loving care of our mom in her final days.
Doreen was predeceased by her husband, Alan, her youngest son, Deen, and by her parents and many of her siblings. She is survived by her twin brother Don (Doris), her eldest daughter Leigh Ann (Kirk), son Greg (Teresa), and son Warren (Shannon), by her grandchildren Ryan (Maureen), Ken (Meghan), Levi, Kaylyn (Harry), Emma (Landen), Sawyer (Sara), Ava, and Ethan, by her great grandchildren Wagner and Hartley, and by many other close friends and relatives. She will be missed by us all.
A Memorial Service will be held in the summer when the flowers are in bloom. An announcement with dates and details will follow. Arrangements in care of David Schurr – Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978-5200.
