Heaven has gained an angel. She truly lived up to her given name of Dorothy JOY as she was a beautiful soul with a heart of gold, who lived her life with kindness and grace. On April 21, 1933, Dorothy, and her twin sister Barbara were born to Harold and Irene Lee in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where these life-long best friends grew up. The twins were the sweetest pair who role modelled goodness and the importance of family, which is Dorothy’s ultimate legacy. Bob and Dorothy celebrated 50 years of marriage, and their family tree included 3 children, 7 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
Her husband Bob worked for the Canadian Armed Forces so they travelled the world with their family living in 22 places throughout Canada and Germany. Mom to Gail, Sue and Rob, she took great pride in her home-making skills and was impeccably organized. She made each new place feel like home within days. Dorothy was part of the UCW & choir at Churchill Park United Church in Winnipeg for many years. In their retirement years, they purchased a cabin at Grand Beach and spent summers there hosting their children and extended families. Cabin life was filled with beach fun, games of card shark and fish fry’s, and when the harsh Manitoba winters kicked in, they were snowbirds who enjoyed their time in Phoenix.
Even though she lived with Alzheimers the last decade of her life, her true sweet essence still shone through like a ray of sunshine. Our most sincere gratitude to Dr. Heather Wright for her years of compassionate care. Special thanks to the staff at Aspira Stonebridge Crossing who treated mom with kindness and support, while making her feel at home. Our family is grateful for the loving care that the Arbor staff gave her.
She was blessed to live a long life, but she lost many special friends and family members throughout the years. She had such strong faith, so we imagine her playing card shark with her husband Bob, her daughter Gail and brother-in-law Jim; baking brownies and tarts with her sister Peggy; walking with her sister-in-law Lil; playing the piano with her parents, and seeing all of her special people who passed before her.
Her legacy will live on with her loving family and community as we celebrate the beautiful life that she led. If you were blessed to have known Dorothy, please join us for her Celebration of Life service on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at 2:00pm at Churchill Park United Church at 525 Beresford Avenue in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Cremation arrangements in care of Mourning Glory, and there will be a private family internment prior to the service.
