HILLER – Ernest Norman. August 14, 1936 – September 14, 2017. It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden, but peaceful passing of Ernie at the family cottage at Chitek Lake, SK. Ernie is survived by Arlene, his wife of 58 years, daughter Kathryn (Murray Timm) step-grandson Alex Christopherson (Chantelle) and step-great-grandson Rylan. Also survived by his sister Naomi (Ron) Cant and nephew Doug Cant of Regina Beach, SK and niece Donna (Dave) Dixon of Winnipeg, MB. Further survived by special friends Jesse Goodwin and family and Iris Hesketh-Boles and family. He was predeceased by his parents Fred and Lydia Hiller. He was born in Wilkie, SK and attended McLurg School in Wilkie, finishing his high school years in Saskatoon at Bedford Road Collegiate. After graduating high school Ernie worked at Saskatoon Co-op in the hardware department. At the encouragement of some of his customers he applied for and was accepted to the Saskatoon Fire Department. He joined the SFD as a firefighter in October 1966 and retired with the rank of Captain on August 31, 1997. He received an award of merit in recognition of over 30 years of dedicated service with no lost time due to illness. After retirement he took on a self-motivated project at Grace Lutheran Church of, in his words, “getting the Church yard in shape”. He spent many hours in a labour of love tending to the church property, both inside and out, that he continued until his passing. He was active in his church on various committees and served as a Church Elder for over 20 years. A Celebration of his Life will take place on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church (603-115th Street East, Saskatoon) with Pastor Rod Parker officiating. Interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Donations in Ernie’s memory may be made to the Saskatchewan Professional Fire Fighters (SPFFA) Burn Fund via the RUH Foundation, Rm 1626, 103 Hospital Drive, Saskatoon, SK, S7N 0W8.
