Gerald "Jerry" Jack Lundgren was born on the Lundgren farm northwest of Marchwell on September 13, 1932. Unlike many of his generation, he completed school and graduated grade 12 in June, 1952. After a few years working various jobs and taking classes at the University of Saskatchewan, he was accepted as study supervisor at Dressler School north of Langenburg. Having found his calling, Jerry enrolled in Moose Jaw Teachers’ College in 1955, serving as vice-principal, principal, and mathematics/science teacher at various schools, eventually obtaining his Bachelor of Education from the U of S. He obtained a Master of Education degree from the U of Oregon in 1972.
At U of S summer school in 1965 he met Evangeline Wiens, also a teacher attending summer school. Five months to the day later, they married December 11, 1965, at Augustana Lutheran Church in Saskatoon. A daughter, Monica, was born in 1966, then a son, Jeff, in 1968, just after the family moved to Saskatoon. Jerry took up a position as math teacher at Walter Murray Collegiate, a position he held until his retirement in 1989.
Another son, Lance, was born in 1971 and Jerry and Evangeline raised their family in Saskatoon, building new houses and moving every few years. He continued to be involved in sports, coaching at the schools he taught, playing soccer, and curling. He was active in his church community, serving on Council, committees, lector, and ushering in December for many years.
His family grew as his daughter married Bryan Johnson in 1991 which provided his first two grandchildren: Colton in 1996 and Dale in 1997. His son, Jeff, married Danielle Brulé in 2001 and he gained two more granddaughters: Satine in 2004 and Gabrielle in 2010. He was an immensely proud grandfather, anxious to watch his grandchildren in soccer, curling, and auto racing.
Jerry continued to be an avid curler and golfer, even into his 80s. Only recently did the pandemic and dementia slow him down. He passed away peacefully August 3, 2022.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 56 years, Evangeline; his daughter, Monica (Bryan); his son Jeff (Danielle); his son Lance; grandchildren Colton Johnson, Dale Johnson, Satine Lundgren, Gabrielle Lundgren; sister Loretta (Len); brother Larry; brothers- and sisters-in-law Serena Dyck, Liz Waldner, Kathy and Mike Hrischuk, Hella and Jim Macdonald, Sela Balzer; numerous nieces and nephews; and grand-nieces and nephews.
