Gloria (Yaroslava) Hrabowy (nee Malicky) was born on June 27th, 1934, in Smuts, Saskatchewan to Anna (Magus) and John Malicky. She attended Borschiw School and in 1952, at the age of 18, moved to Saskatoon and lived with her Baba Sophie Magus. While in Saskatoon, she worked at the Trio Café and Commodore Café. On October 23rd, 1953, she married her true love Alex Hrabowy and they began their life together. She started working part-time at Mount Royal Hardware and Laundry Mat. Later, she went on to work at Sears as an assistant manager in the boys department until her retirement. Mom enjoyed cooking, gardening, and embroidering, as well as a good game of Kaiser. Summers were spent at Candle Lake fishing, gardening, caring for her marigolds, and playing cards. Mom and Dad enjoyed their retirement years travelling to Ukraine, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Pennsylvania, Barbados, and to their most loved place, Hawaii. Mom’s fridge is covered in Hawaii magnets, one for every year she travelled. Mom and Dad moved to Ilarion Residence in 1999 where they made many friends. Mom was always eager to volunteer for events in the Ukrainian community and was a supportive leader for many tenant programs. She was the Tenants Association treasurer for most of the years she lived at Ilarion. Her Ukrainian heritage and culture were important to her. Mom was a part of the welcoming committee at Ilarion for the families escaping the war in Ukraine. She volunteered 3 days a week at the church to prepare and bag perogies for church events and perogie sales. On her free days, she would make perogies for her kids and grandkids to take home. We can say that she truly made the best perogies.
Gloria is predeceased by her husband Alex, parents John and Anna (Magus) Malicky, and uncles Peter and John Magus. Her memory will be cherished by her daughter Kathy, son Terry (Julie), grandchildren Raisa (Brandyn) Bertrand, Roman and Ashley, Ruslan (Allie) Haines, Krystle, Tania (Derrick) Sorenson, and Orisha, her precious great-grandsons Aiden and Boden Bertrand, cousins Merv and Rosemary Magus and numerous cousins, nephew, nieces, in Canada, Ukraine and USA.
Donations in Gloria’s memory can be made to Ilarion Residence, 2509 Louise Street, Saskatoon, S7J 3L7.
We will definitely miss our Mama, Baba, and Pra Baba for all her love, wisdom and guidance. She will live in our hearts forever and we will never forget her as she makes a peaceful transfer to our Saviour, for she has earned her Eternal Rest. Vichnaya Pamiat - Memory Eternal
