With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Gordon Edward Johnson, a brilliant scientist, devoted educator, and beloved family man. Born in Welland, ON in 1934 Gord dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge and the enrichment of others, leaving an indelible mark on both his field and the countless lives he touched.
Gord's passion for discovery and learning took him across the globe. As both a teacher and researcher, he traveled the world, sharing his expertise, inspiring students, and contributing to the advancement of science. Although he was the author of over 100 research publications, he was most proud of his teaching awards. It is through his teaching that Gord left his greatest professional contribution. Countless U of S Doctors, Dentists, Pharmacists, and Nurses will continue to benefit from the knowledge Gord shared with them.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary-Jane (Nee Bowles), who he loved and greatly admired for her strength and determination. He is also survived by his six children: Dorrie (Garnet), Ian (Noella), Warren (Corinne), Louise (Kevin), Ted (Lisa), and Rebecca (Drew). His legacy of love and laughter extends further to his 15 grandchildren: Angela (Garth), Gillian (Joel), Megan (Drew), Kelsey (Ben), Sarah (Hayden), Vinnie (Cam), Victoria (Simon), Renee, Graham, Trevor, Ryan, Amy, Rhett, Savina and Nadia and his grandson-in-law Bill. As well as 8 great-grandchildren: Kade, Abby, Carsyn, Easton, Maren, Lyndie, Sullivan, and Crew who will continue to honour his memory with affection and admiration.
He was predeceased by his infant brother, his father and mother: Edward and Dorothy (nee Willams), his son in law Garnet and 2 granddaughters Laura and Christina, as well as his dear friend Lorne Jamieson.
Known for his remarkable sense of humour, Gord was the kind of man who could light up any room. His wit and charm left a lasting impression—so much so that even after he left a room, people continued to talk about him. His family and friends will undoubtedly continue to share and celebrate the countless stories and moments of joy he gifted them.
Gord passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the family he adored, and his faithful canine companion Mr. Chips! Though he has left us physically, his spirit lives on in the many hearts he touched, in the laughter that echoes through stories, and in the memories that will endure for generations to come.
Gord wished to thank Home Care for their tremendous service to him and MJ over the past months. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
May Gord’s legacy of kindness, brilliance, and humor (in six different languages!) inspire us all as we celebrate a life well-lived. Raise a glass of scotch to Gord! He will be profoundly missed, but never forgotten.
A private family service will take place at a later date.
Arrangements are in care of Ryan Lensen
