1928 - 2026
John Demke, 97, passed away on April 1, 2026 at Sherbrooke Community Centre in the loving presence of his daughter, Doris. John was born in Plock, Poland to ethnic German parents. His family later migrated to West Germany, where he trained as a millwright. He eventually immigrated to Canada, settling in Saskatoon where he met the love of his life, Margarete (Bruekmann), a German citizen touring Canada at the time. They were married in 1957 and went on to raise two daughters, Susan and Doris.
John dedicated 35 years of his life to the Potash Company of America, now part of Nutrien Ltd. He had a strong work ethic and met each day with resilience and quiet strength. His family meant everything to him, and he had a special soft spot for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He found happiness in the simple things –nature, gardening, woodworking and cooking and lovingly shared that joy with others, often delivering home-cooked meals just to brighten someone’s day. John was known for his sharp wit and humor. His life was a reflection of kindness, generosity, and a heart that gave so much to those around him.
John was predeceased by his beloved wife, Margarete Demke; his treasured daughter Susan Beliveau; his parents Lydia and Adolph; and his siblings Emma, Joseph, Gustaf and Edward.
He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Doris (George) Paul; grandchildren Anthony (Lauren) and Alexis (Josh); and his great-grandchildren, Luna and Sage. He is also survived by granddaughters, Lauren and Lisa Beliveau and their families, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
John requested a small funeral with only immediate family. The family is deeply grateful to his church family at Trinity Lutheran Church, who became his extended family over the years. Thank you as well to the staff at Sherbrooke; your kindness and friendship meant so much to him. With peace in our hearts, we know he has gone home to be with his Lord.
