Inez Moorcraft passed away peacefully on March 21, 2026, at the age of 90.
Born on February 11, 1936, in Temperance Vale, New Brunswick, Inez entered the world during a winter storm in the countryside. She was the middle of seven children born to Guy and Jessie Moorcraft. Her early years were shaped by wartime life, as her father served overseas with the army for five and a half years, returning home when Inez was about six years old.
Inez grew up in Woodstock, New Brunswick, where she attended school through Grade 7 and was actively involved in the Baptist Church. She was baptized at the age of twelve. From a young age, she demonstrated a strong sense of service, volunteering to babysit for Salvation Army officers through her church—an experience that sparked her lifelong interest in Army service.
After moving to Fredericton, Inez completed Grades 9 and 10. Financial realities led her to leave school early to work for a year in laundry so she could pursue training as a Practical Nurse. She completed her nursing education in Moncton and Shelburne, Nova Scotia, graduating in 1953. She began her nursing career in Fredericton at the Polio Clinic and later moved to Pediatrics, where she worked for two and a half years.
In the late 1950s, Inez felt called to ministry and entered the Salvation Army Training College, receiving her Commission in 1959. Her service took her to many communities across Canada, including postings in Ontario, New Brunswick, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. She served in Toronto, Petrolia, Bracebridge, Calgary, Maple Creek, and Nipawin. While living in Nipawin, she led worship services, Sunday School, Home League groups, and youth programs in both Nipawin and Choiceland. She was the only woman in the local Ministerial Association and was known for her dedication, creativity, and tireless work with children and families.
After several demanding years, health concerns led Inez to step away from Army service. She returned to nursing, first working at the Nipawin Hospital before moving to Saskatoon. In October 1966, she began working at University Hospital, spending time in Rehabilitation and then twelve years in Emergency. In 1979, she transferred to City Hospital, where she worked in Maternity and later Orthopedics—work she loved deeply. She retired from nursing in May 1994 after more than four decades of service.
Retirement did not slow Inez down. After taking a year off, she answered a newspaper advertisement for babysitting and was hired by a young family, Gaye and Larry Peters—an experience she later described as one of the best decisions of her life. She cared for Austin, Owen, and Benton for many years and remained a cherished part of their lives.
Inez was active in her church, counting money for several years and generously giving her time. She enjoyed macramé, crochet, and knitting, and later discovered a love of scrapbooking. At the age of 80, she began painting through the Sherbrooke Day Program, finding great joy in this new creative pursuit.
Throughout her life, Inez lived with faith, resilience, and a deep commitment to serving others. She will be remembered for her kindness, dedication, and the lasting impact she made on the many lives she touched.
