Irene was born to Peter and Anna Schiltz on January 23, 1920, the second to last, of 12 children. She grew up on the family farm 4 four miles northwest of Annaheim. She took her schooling at Schuler school until grade eight and then took grade nine and ten by correspondence. She always thought that being a nurse would be a good profession but when she had to get her tonsils out at the hospital in Lake Lenore and heard a woman, giving birth in a room nearby, she abandoned the idea of nursing. After grade ten she took jobs, helping out some of her older sisters families with the children, doing sewing and helping with the chores.
The Schreiner family was already known to the Schiltz’s through the union of several of Irene’s older siblings and it seemed only natural that in 1939 Tony Schreiner and Irene tied the knot. Tony already had some farmland, and they began their life together on a quarter northeast of Annaheim. Several years passed and they were blessed with a baby girl that they named Joan Marie. Irene always kept an immaculate house and like most folks, grew a huge garden for canning in the fall. She planted the usual vegetables but especially enjoyed watching flowers grow. She would always have a huge area beside her vegetables for garden flowers planted near the driveway so you could see the beautiful flowers as one drove into the yard.
Irene was a quiet person but would gladly have a friendly conversation with anyone. She worked tirelessly and was always involved in the community. She was a great seamstress, making all of Joan’s childhood clothes and many beautiful quilts. She was a good cook but she loved baking and she tantalized the family with her caramels and cheese balls with pies being her specialty. She had many friends that she would coffee with in Annaheim and she always had her sisters for frequent conversations. She worked at the Annaheim general store for many years where she made friends with the customers. She enjoyed her time spent there and the people enjoyed her cheery face as they came to do their shopping. Tony passed away unexpectantly in 1988, and she moved to Saskatoon in October 2004 to be with her daughter. Joan passed in November 2004, and Irene moved into her own apartment for a few years and then moved in with her granddaughter, Rhonda. Finally, she moved into Sunnyside Nursing home, in Saskatoon for the last few years of her life.
She was predeceased by her husband Tony, her daughter Joan, and her grandson Brad; her parents and all 11 of her siblings. Left to mourn, her granddaughter Rhonda (Dean), her great-granddaughters Jessica (Josh) and their son Rowan, Brittany (Ryan), and her grandson Rick (Marcy).
For such a small lady, she touched the hearts of so many and she will always be missed.
