February 23, 1933 - January 13, 2014
With her children and grandchildren at her side, Jean passed away peacefully at St. Paul’s Hospital at the age of 80. Left to mourn her passing are her daughter Jane (Ken Brown), son William (Joan Bobyn), grandchildren David (Twyla), Meghan, Andrew, Shannon and Matt, great-grandchildren Elijah and Sadie, sisters Patricia Hamill and Sheelah Oliver, brother Bill (Lynn) Oliver, and nieces and nephews Sharon, Betty, Rob, Linda, Shelley, Tracey and Kelly. She was predeceased by her mother Betty (Scott) Oliver, father Jock Oliver, step-mother Helen (Thomson) Oliver, the father of her children Bill Wallace, and brother-in-law Bill Hamill. She was born in City Hospital in 1933, the eldest of four children. She grew up on the family farm at Cheviot, Alcana and then Floral until she moved to Saskatoon to attend high school. She attended Teachers College then taught in Glenside (where she met her future husband) and in Vonda. After marrying in 1956 she joined the Saskatoon Public School Division where she taught for over 25 years, 19 of them at College Park School. Mom loved teaching and she loved books and reading. The last half of her career was as a teacher librarian. Ill health forced her to retire early in 1989. Her family meant everything to her. She needed very little encouragement to plan a party for the family whether it be for holidays, birthdays, the first day of spring or Chinese New Year. She loved planning and taking trips with her grandchildren in search of adventure in southern Saskatchewan, to elder hostels in BC, Disney World, Montana and elsewhere. The grandchildren spent many wonderful days at the farm with mom and dad. There was a large tickle trunk of dress up clothes, tea party props and tents and blankets for hideouts. She hosted sleepovers for the grandchildren and their friends. She loved the acreage and was an avid gardener. She developed an appreciation and love of books in her children and grandchildren. Any occasion merited a trip to the book store to buy books for the kids. Books were always the gift of choice. She was always interested in what everyone was doing and had a very quick mind right to the end. Mom’s final years were challenging and her family would like to thank those who made her life that little bit better, the staff at the intermediate care home at Riverside Terrace, and especially Lori and Charlene, her physiotherapist Susan, her hairdresser Dianne, and personal care provider Bernie for being so kind and caring. A Celebration of Jean’s Life will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 18th at Windsor Chapel (704 Windsor Street) For those unable to attend the service will be available via Webcasting at www.windsorchapelsaskatoon.com.
