On September 13, 1921 Laura May was born to John S. and Florence (Northcott) Miller in Maymont SK. Her career choice was nursing and she graduated from City Hospital, Saskatoon. She passed away in that same hospital Feb 11, 2016. As a Public Health nurse she was sent to the SW corner of SK to administer to their needs. The stories she could tell about the old Model T, no fences, trails for roads and lack of places to stay were most interesting. She was sent by the government to Toronto to get her Diploma of Public Health Nursing. It was there she met her sweetheart, Lloyd Shepherd. Laura had to go back to SK for two years spending them in Leader and Shaunavon. Returning to Toronto she married Lloyd. During Lloyd and Laura’s careers they lived in numerous places in Ont. They both went back to university and Laura obtained her Teaching Degree in nursing and Lloyd his Education Degree. Where ever they lived, Laura nursed and taught and Lloyd was a teaching High School Principal. Laura lived to learn and Lloyd always said he loved her most for her intellect. While rather frail, she was strong in soul, mind, morals, convictions, kindness and determination to meet her goals, always done with a great sense of humor. On a cruise to Trinidad, they bought beach property sight unseen in Granada. They built a house of cindercrete blocks to avoid termites. Most of their vacation time was spent there for many years. Their last home was in Barrie, ON where they survived the tornado in 1986. Lloyd became ill and passed away in 1989. During her life, Laura belonged to many organizations and after coming west to Nurses Reunions, she decided the air was better for her health and she retired to Saskatoon in 2001. She was a member of Third Ave. United Church and Rebekah Lodge. After 40 year career she still took classes at the U of S for several years, was an avid reader of everything, especially her daily newspaper. She had a keen interest in family and loved to travel as was evident with her trips to Cuba each winter until she was 90. Laura also travelled to Mexico, ON, and BC and each summer met her sister at Jackfish Lake for a holiday past her 94th year. Christmas was always a trip to Calgary to be with her sister and family. Laura’s favorite memory was baking cookies on the farm and her brothers filling their pockets and running off. Laura was our “Cookie Monster”. When life was not a bowl of cherries, her favorite expression was “Isn’t that a beggar!” We will dearly miss our Laura and all her good stories. Laura was predeceased by her husband Lloyd, parents, brothers Allan and Bob. Survived by her sister Margaret Hallet of Calgary and numerous nieces and nephews in ON, BC, AB, SK and Colorado. We would like to thank doctors, nurses and staff who cared for her at Palisades, Franklin and Cedar Garden. Goodbye to our dear Laura and life well lived. Internment at a later date.
